New Bakery, located in the heart of the Broadview Gerrard Chinatown, has a wide variety of hot menu items as well as baked buns and other pastries. I went in on this particular occasion and opted to try out their hot lunch. Featured in the images is their 3 item combo - ... pick one carb (either rice or noodles) along with 3 items. I got the shanghai noodles, deep fried fish, eggplant, and spareribs. Here is a quick break down of each item. Shanghai noodles: This dish reminds me of your standard food card noodle fare, it's not particularly flavourful, they're a bit on the soggy side, and is a bit too oily for my liking. It's a bit bland and doesn't quite have the shanghai noodle taste that I'm used to. I'd give this noodle dish a 3/5 at best and I'm being generous. Fried fish: not as oily as I expected it to be so that's a good thing. The fish had good flavor, savory, slightly salty and not too spicy. I appreciated that the fish didn't have a heavy coating of batter. I'd give this a 4/5. Eggplant: by far, my favourite of all the dishes. It was soft and had the signature taste that I'm used to. Not too spicy for my palate so was able to thoroughly enjoy. This also gets a 4/5. Ribs: this one caught me by surprise because my brain anticipated a certain taste. The look reminds me of the classic black bean steamed ribs you'd get at dim sum time. These ribs have the texture of that dim sum dish but has some extra flavours that I didn't expect. I want to say it tastes like fermented bean curd was added which does make sense as it can be used in this dish but less so in its dim sum format. Overall, I liked it but can see it might catch people off guard if they've never had it before. This also gets a 3/5. Hot and Sour soup: this meal combo also comes with your choice of soup. I opted for the hot and sour soup. It's a pretty basic, two dimensional soup - it's spicy and it's salty but I was really missing the more balanced approach. I felt like the soup could have been a bit more sour and perhaps go easier on the salt and heat. Given that it's a freebie soup, I wasn't surprised it only had minimal ingredients. Again 3/5. Would I come back to New Bakery to try another boxed meal dish? Staff were pleasant and served me promptly. Hot food area seemed well maintained overall. So, yeah, I probably would. I've only tried 3 of the items and there is still plenty more to choose from. Given the greasier nature of some of the food items, I might ask to see if they have plain white rice because I'm definitely not feeling their shanghai noodles. Read more
