For a small town I suppose it's not horrible. It's a little grungy, run down. Doesn't look like it has been renovated since the 70's. But they have good wait staff, sadly the food is overpriced.
When you get to Kakabeka Falls keep going. Don’t sleep here. This place should pay you to stay here. I can’t believe they charge anything for the delapadated rooms. Our room has the same carpet that was installed in the 1950’s, filthy with cigarette burns, the same old broken lamps, ... mattress as hard as a rock, the pillows were 2” thick, and the tv is an old 13” 1950’s tv. Oh and a train goes by around 3am with its whistle blowing. The staff in the restaurant are very nice and the food seemed to be ok. But the accommodations are TERRIBLE😝👎 Read more
The Kakabeka Hotel: This joint is a dive on par with the old (and demolished) St. Louis, the Laprade and numerous other beer drinking holes in the Thunder Bay area. Open the door and follow the dirt trail in the worn out carpet to find your way. Personally, I ... hate the place but there is not much to choose from in Kakabeka Falls Ontario for eating establishments. The "Dining Room" usually has the entrance door closed and there is a sign on it that says that the dining room is air conditioned. This is a lie. I have lived near this rural community for almost 20 years now and cannot remember a time when the air conditioner has worked. While we talking about the dining room; the tables all have place-mats and silverware on them. If you have a chance, watch the table being cleaned after a patron has left. When less than the 4 place settings has been used the dirty ones are gathered up and with a quick wipe to that part of the table only new settings are place in position. If your child cleaned the table at home like that would you be happy? As a customer does this make you happy? I called a waitress on this lazy practice and asked her if she was trained to do it because every waitress there does the very same thing. She told me that they do this because it is easier for them. She told me that with attitude and she has held a grudge for months. You have to pass through the Coffee Shop to get to the dining room. Interesting – there are no place settings on the tables. The same waitresses serve both sides but it now appears that there is no advantage to having the tables set or not set so the waitress lied. It is not easier on this side. On the way to the washroom you pass the ATM machine that has a sign that says it is out of order. LOL – It has been “out of order” for over 4 years now. Anyway, follow the dirty trail in the worn out carpet You will not get lost. The Men”s Room has no latch on the one and only stall door. Trust me, you will not want to touch anything in that room. The Womans Room is no better with one stall latch having been broken for months and months. My wife says that everything is sticky in there an you don't want to touch anything. The real reason I write about is that my wife has a legitimate health issue that requires her to eat gluten free or she is very sick. One day my wife ordered a sandwich on gluten free bread and specifically requested that the bread be grilled. She wants this because of cross-contamination from the toaster. The waitress got all snarky and asked if she wanted the lettuce grilled too. My wife took the time to make the request and the waitress not only displayed attitude but she turned and growled at my wife for “her” attitude. If there was another place in the area to eat I would have gone there at that moment. The sandwich came burned in an effort to teach my wife a lesson. This waitress avoids eye contact with us to this day and we have to sit and wait until another waitress serves us. Fast forward to today. My wife orders a denver sandwich with bacon instead of ham because almost all precessed meat uses wheat for filler and so contains gluten. The waitress went to the kitchen and then we heard and male voice swearing “BULLS***” a couple of times and then “no way, we are not doing it”. The owner of the hotel shits on a regular patron. My wife told the waitress that this is a health issue and that the next time the owner decides to swear and not accommodate a customer he should make sure the doors and ticket window is closed so we cannot hear him. There are children in the dining room side and they can hear him too. Anyway, we gently told the waitress that he has cost himself our business and believe me we intend to never darken that door again. Too bad because we really like at least one of the waitresses (Alesha) and only one of the cooks (Joy). The waitresses give the cook 20% of their tips. Can you guess how much of a tip we left today? Attended 50th anniversary party. Food was great cooked locally. Prices reasonably good for bevvies, juke box for music. Close to falls.
