Buffet Maharaja - Montreal, Quebec

I ate at this place not too long ago. The food is alright no complains but the staff is horrible. The staff doesn't help out the customers. They judge the customers in their own language (which is actually the language I spoke) so I understood everything the staff was saying. ... The option of tipping is not available because they already add the tip to your bill. They attract the customers with a low price displayed on their window but then add tips and other charges to the bill exceeding budgets. I also had a chance to look at their kitchen. I was hesitant to go to this place because of all the awful reviews. I went there today for a lunch despite them (thanks for the lack of decent cheap Indian cuisine options in the Downtown, I guess), and took 3 co-workers with me, and we actually liked it. If ... it was a restaurant, not a buffet, I'd rate it as 3 stars, though. The food was very decent for a buffet. The choice wasn't great, but it was okay: some salads, sauces, fried onion thing, samosas, 2 kinds of bread, rice, 4 or 5 vegetarian main dishes, 3 or 4 main dishes with meat, ice cream and fruits for desert. I didn't try any of the meat-containing dishes, but all the vegetarian options were in the range from okay to pretty good. The service was just fine: water was poured often, we had more napkins when we needed them, we got served a very tasty, huge and fresh nan bread, and the waiter guy was overall very pleasant, fast and cheerful. In the end the card terminal didn't have a tip option. I had to tell the guy the tip amount, so he added it manually. Which was odd. Anyway, I'm happy to give it 4 star and to consider it in the future for lunch, as a pretty decent buffet place. Read more

To bluntly put it; it was an incredibly insulting experience. First and last time we pay to risk our health eating garbage. The food was barely room temperature, that is a BIG concern. There are absolutely no labels on the food and very minimal choice. Water was served warm. When I ... brought the fact of the buffet food being cold to our waiter, he simply removed my plate and returned it after microwaving it to a steaming mound of plaster... I didn't even finish one plate.... the room temperature buffet was never addressed. Totally disgusting washed out leftovers style food, poverty ambiance and extremely unprofessional and inexperienced service, if your a staff member, the dining area is certainly not the appropriate place to be walking around with your jeans pulled down and your underwear hanging out. Absolutely the worst buffet I have ever experienced. I see these same complaints going back over a year... how are they still open? Unfortunately my wife required the use of their 'Ladies Room'. Apparently it reaked and was certainly not clean.......glad I didn't need to use their 'Men's Room'. For $20 a plate, there are far better buffets in Montreal, don't waste your time, money or health....... We certainly won't return. Read more

Tuesdays. $8.61 buffet for students. I had lowered my standards for such a price and the reviews but I was pleasantly surprised. The food was warm and fresh (save for some of the naan bread in the heater had gotten a little hard as I came in late). The butter ... chicken was especially top notch. The waiter was polite and friendly. Most of all, prompt too. Refilled my glass without it going empty and brought extra napkins before I ran out. For less than $10 I'd rather come here every time and actually get full instead of going to a fast food place honestly. It's pretty good! Read more

I have been this restaurant very recently, and I must say my dining experience has been very different from all the negative reviews here. I am guessing service has been improved. I loved the food, Indian enough but suitable for the North American taste bud. Loved all the amazing curry! ... The staff were warm and friendly. The Indian desserts were simply decadent. The only downside was, I ordered cola with my meal and they were out of it, but it must have been a temporary problem. I would go back to this restaurant and recommend it to others. Read more
