Restaurant Manitoba - Montreal, Quebec

I have mixed feelings about my visit and I will explain below: At the beginning of August, I made reservations (online) for a Saturday night at the end of September. The restaurant was easy to find, lots of parking available, and in a nice quiet area. Vaccine passport was quick and ... our table was ready when we got there. Our waitress then informed us that they had a set menu of 5 courses for the night. Meaning that we couldn't make menu choices (other than dietary restrictions of course). She also told us we could have a wine pairing if we wanted, otherwise they had 2 mixed drinks to offer. We went with the mixed drinks and moved on from there. At no point did the waitress inform us of how much the 5-course meal cost. The food was exceptional and I enjoyed the experience of eating different local foods prepared in unique ways. And the presentation was on point. I attached photos of some of the courses for reference. In short, management/service put me off a bit but the food was amazing and the experience was unique. In the end it was $85/person for the meal, drinks about $12-$13 each. I often opt for the tasting menu, but would prefer to have the choice. What a great dining experience! This place is so welcoming with its charming ambiance and knowledgeable staff. We shared a lot and enjoyed it all. Wanted to try something new and started with seal. The first bite was just OK, but a little bit of salt brought the flavor up. Scallops with sunchokes ... were great. The three different textures of sunchokes worked very well together and accompanied the scallops in such a nice way. Then it comes the whelks stuffed leeks appetizer which wakes up all the senses with its phenomenal smoky flavor and texture. We were in heaven! The 3 main dishes did not disappoint either.The arctic char and suckling pig were to die for! The duck as well. The only thing I did not care much for, was rutabaga which was little bit too bitter and was overpowering the taste of the perfectly prepared duck breast. A little bit of caramelization would most likely take care of that, but that's just my opinion. The cheese platter followed with 3 surprising flavors. It was very good just like the sunflower desert. Such amazing food for an extremely good price. Strongly recommend the seal as an app, and you can't really go wrong with any of the entrees. We had the Arctic Char and Suckling Pig, but everything looked terrific. Cool set up where the kitchen is completely open to the rest ... of the restaurant with seating right where you can watch everything be cooked. Really recommend trying to sit there. Fantastic, local food in a cosy setting. Great for summer evenings. Loved the duck hearts with fiddle heads, and the seal! Excellent wine list, specifically orange wines, and Fred is a great sommelier :)

Really good place to try something new. Their Boreal inspiration is something unique in Montréal. Food is fine and tasteful. I recommend the deer and seal. Service is impeccable. Dish are really well explained. You feel they are proud of their product and suppliers. Your glass will always be full ... without even noticing their presence. Read more
