I recently dined at Jatoba and had an excellent experience. The sashimis were top-notch, incredibly fresh and delicious. If you're lucky enough to get a seat in the back room, you'll enjoy a cozy atmosphere with a great vibe, perfect for a relaxing meal. The crowd tends to be older, ... which adds to the refined ambiance. Our waitress, Catherine, was fantastic. She helped us decide what to order and her recommendations were spot on. The selection of sake is good, though not extensive, but you'll still find something pleasing. Food tastes good. The tuna and salmon tartare were expensive for the size. Papaya salad is good but lacks some flavor. One dish that was great is the Hamachi sushi and the desserts (caramel and citrus desserts). Service and ambiance are amazing. We had dinner at Jatoba to celebrate our 20th anniversary. This was our first visit here, being from out of town. We were greeted warmly and received a complimentary glass of champagne for the occasion. It set a really nice tone to the evening. We love sharing plates and ordered a ... total of 5 dishes and 1 dessert. Our server made excellent recommendations to help us choose. My husband had the sea urchin with caviar and LOVED it ( I don't like sea urchin or caviar, so am not a good judge for this dish :-). My favourite was the filet mignon, which came with a sauce and vegetables that were simply dreamy. Dessert was a blondie with caramel and marshmallow cream - delicious. The food at Jatoba is delicious and thoughtfully prepared. The service is remarkable: personable, professional, prompt, smooth, knowledgeable. And the ambiance is the right mix of lively and relaxed. Be prepared for a higher bill, especially if you order dishes with premium ingredients, and have several drinks or a bottle of wine. Exquisitely romantic! The food was divine. The dumplings and scallops are a must try. The blondie dessert was sensational, I have never had such an amazing dessert at a Japanese restaurant before. The grilled calamari was lovely but I would not order it again.
