Second Cup - Edmonton, Alberta

Went through the drive through while we were out running errands. A hot chocolate sustained me for the rest of the way. I love Second Cup, it's my go to for coffee, hot chocolate, tea, cold drinks, They also have little goodies to accompany your drink (like squares, bars, ... cookies, breakfast fare). Fantastic coffee, efficient service, lots of chairs and table (tho the atmosphere and parking lot are a bit dated). My americano was good, the brewed iced tea was not to my sister’s liking unfortunately. Second Cup is my favourite coffee shop in the province.

I ordered a medium iced caramel correto and was immediately offered an upgrade offer to go from medium to large for just 40 cents. I made the mistake of accepting the offer without fully understanding their points system. When I reached the window to pay, I informed the staff that I ... wanted to use my points. However, I was told that my points were not enough to cover the cost. I felt frustrated because the amount of points I had indicated that I could get the iced caramel correto. I asked if I could pay the difference, but the staff member refused. I apologized and asked if they could make me a medium instead. To my surprise, the staff member looked at me with a smile and said, "No, I already made you a large." This response made me feel humiliated and belittled. Then, what I assume was the manager, appeared and reiterated that I had ordered the upgraded size for 40 cents. I acknowledged this fact and explained that I would like a medium instead. I felt bad because I couldn't afford the larger size, and I made that clear to the manager. However, she tried to act friendly and said, "It's on us." I declined her offer because I didn't want anything for free; I simply wanted to use my points, which I had on my account to prove they were valid. Despite my request, they still gave me the large size as if I should be grateful. The manager continued to smile and act condescending, making me feel even worse about not being able to afford the $7 or whatever it cost. I did have the 40 cent difference that I offered, but they still refused to accommodate my request. I am utterly disgusted by how these people humiliated and degraded me simply because I couldn't afford a slightly larger size of coffee. It's unbelievable that they would treat a customer in such a manner. I even asked if I could come back later and order a medium, but the manager responded, "But we made you the large" because I "upgraded." All of this over just 40 cents. It's truly unacceptable and has left me deeply disappointed in Second Cup. They should be ashamed of themselves for their lack of empathy and understanding. The coffee was about as good as any other Second Cup. For some reason, there was only one person working in the morning. Poor guy looked pretty overworked, which isn't his fault at all. Just seems like there should have been at least one other person.

Really good atmosphere quiet place can come with family. People who work here are really smiling and nice
