Reviews for The Wooden Spoon in White Rock, British Columbia
I had heard many positive things about the Wooden Spoon and so decided to give it ago to today. I arrived just after noon and there were a number of patrons inside but it was not overly busy. There was one female server who was quite efficient in managing all ... the tables by herself. There was also a male staff member who seemed to be walking around a lot but other than that I could not tell exactly what his role he was. I did notice he repeatedly glanced the entire time I was there, which was a little disconcerting but what can you do? He never approached me or spoke to me so it was bit odd. Service was a little slow but considering only one person was doing the work it was understandable. For full disclosure I used to always go to the now defunct Poultry on Motion on Marine Drive for my eggs Benedict and for me they set the gold standard. At the Wooden Spoon there are a few options so I just chose the first one on the list which was called The Wooden. Unfortunately, for me, it did not meet the gold standard, but that could be due just to the fact that it was different than what I was used to and others might really like it. It was certainly very tasty and the caramelized onions certainly added some flavour. It wasn’t great, but it wasn’t bad either. Overall I enjoyed the experience. I had ordered the meal along with a coffee expecting to get the coffee first followed by the meal when ready. Unfortunately both were delivered at the same time and I suspect the server had forgotten about the coffee at first. What I did like was that the coffee came with an ample amount of real cream in a little silver container which you rarely see these days. A nice touch. There are lots of different meals available on the menu and they seem to go a bit further in terms of what you will find in the average breakfast place. But those extra touches came at quite a premium. My bill for eggs Benedict, coffee, taxes and tip added up to a whopping $35 when at my favourite former place the cost would be around $14. Too high for my budget so this will not be my go-to breakfast place. But I would like to try some of the other offerings I saw on the menu so I will probably return occasionally when I am in the mood to treat myself to something new occasionally. Finally there is the issue of parking. Street parking is limited and there are a couple of paid parking lots behind. In the past it was fairly easy to find free parking around White Rock so I find these paid lots popping up everywhere to be annoying. However, drive a little further west along Russell where the restaurant is located and you come to Foster where street parking is free. Read more
My boyfriend and I was planning to have breakfast at another restaurant but unfortunately it was closed so I googled what was nearby. Wooden Spoon was about 2 minutes away and we gave it a go. The place was busy and because we didn’t have a reservation, the wait was ... going to be about 30-45 mins wait but the bar was available immediately so we took it. Jessica the lady behind the bar was very attentive, helpful and treated us with smiles and kindness. She helped me picked my breakfast since I don’t eat pork. Overall the experience was amazing. My boyfriend already says it’s going to be our regular breakfast joint. Wooden Spoon is a hidden gem. You will not be disappointed. All staff are wonderful. Read more
The food and drinks were amazing! Good portion sizes and incredibly tasty. Based on food alone it would be 5 stars. My issue was with the service. It wasn’t terrible, our server got our order and brought our food but it certainly seemed like she wanted to be anywhere else ... but serving food. No conversation, no recommendations basically no personality. That would be fine if there wasn’t the expectation of a tip. I work in the industry and I have no problem tipping. But when I get the bare minimum of service it makes it really difficult to justify. She made a small attempt at conversation when the bill came, presumably to secure a good tip. I’ll be coming back, but probably just for take out. Read more
Food 4.5/5 Fresh and tasty Service 4/5 Staff are kind and attentive. They nicely asked us to leave after about two hours of dining time saying people were waiting. We understood and settled the bill. But there were empty tables so not really sure why they rushed us. Ambience 5/5 Very cute Return ... likelihood: yes if I am in the area again as it’s quite far away from my neighborhood Read more
Another White Rock gem that took me way too long to try! Really nice staff and vibe here. It’s so hard to find spots that compare to service and standards of Vancouver and Wooden Spoon does not disappoint! We came for a birthday lunch/brunch and it was pretty busy for a weekday. The ... service was great. The food was delicious and the drinks were great. We are vegan + gluten free and dairy free + gluten free so there isn’t too much for us on the menu, but that’s ok. Unfortunately in 2024 it’s still a struggle to find restaurants that cater to non soy + gluten eating vegans + dairy free peeps. I would definitely come here again. It’s seems like a really awesome local spot to have some awesome food and drinks! Read more
