Shiki Sushi - Victoria, British Columbia

Okay to start 3.1 stars is CRAZY low for this bomb of a place! The sushi is incredibly fantastic everything is cooked perfectly and most impoetantly your seafood is never overdone so no chewy unedible squid. Everytime i visit my friend who lives by ICBC we go here for lunch, ... my usual is Beef Teriyaki with Udon and a side of sushi (salmon or california rolls, sometimes just get sashimi of sorts) and the Udon bowl is actually one of the best dishes Ive ever eaten in my life, the sushi to no surprise doesnt taste dofferent than any other classic california roll or salmon roll but to my liking, if it tastes as good as places that ive come back to its as good as any. But I cant stress this enough for 10.50 you are getting a GOOD PORTION of food, the don buri aswell you get not just a whole bowl of rice with a little bit of chicken or whatever you choose you are getting a PERFECT balance. This place is never busy which makes it a perfect place for anyone whos going on a nervous date. The food is fantastic and the service is definitely 5 stars, my friend sucks with chopsticks and on the third visit there after having months inbetween they recognized that he needed a fork. Our waters and drinks are never finished because the server is always checking on us, one time my beef was cold while my soup was hot and I said just microwave the beef or reheat it they said thats ridiculous and made me an entire new one free of charge. Dirtiest restaurant I've ever been in. The carpet is completely worn out and stained, the floor tiles around the walls are black, the ceilings are blacked around the air vents. Its depressing. Sushi is not bad, but not really that good. We ordered crispy calamari that we had to send ... back. Service was ok. Will not go back. Read more

I was disappointed with the portion sizes for the price. They do, however use real crab in their california rolls and wild sockeye in the sashimi. If you order spicy sashimi, get the sauce on the side because they put too much on.

Very tasty, but very small rolls, with very little fish in them, and the Sashimi pieces are half the size of what is served at other places, good quality fish though the presentation of the food is somewhat lacking. One feels like their paying top dollar for sushi ... and getting served the bare minimum, maybe a good place for those who want to say they went out for sushi but don't really want to consume any raw fish. This place is clearly not Japanese. In fact all of the waitresses I've seen and two of the chefs spoke Chinese. This fact apparently reflects the service: No greetings when you enter, no greetings when you leave, the way waitresses talk to you etc. The menu is using a very ... small font and combined with the dim light is hard to read. If you manage to read it, you have to be familiar what's what because there are no pictures - at all ! The place is almost empty (which alone is good) but that might be either because it is not popular yet or because it is not going to become popular (check the yelp critical reviews about the other place of theirs in Victoria). In their promotional video all seems luxurious but in reality you can see the carpet is worn, the chairs are also old and having many scratches. I ate a tonkatsu but the salmon on my wife's sushi was very thin with dark spots and obviously not fresh (dry). There was no music which I rate as neutral since there might be a good choice or bad choice of music. Our orders came surprisingly fast but overall I would not recommend this place to a friend.
