Tooks on Cook Cafe - Victoria, British Columbia

CAUTION! NEW OWNERS! I used to go in and spend my $6 a day, but not anymore! Jacked up the coffee price with no improvements ("its fair trade coffee" who cares it was $4 for 16oz) and I wont be back. Too bad too but there is better around.

Tooks On Cook use to have the most amazing chocolate croissants! They must have a new chef/baker because the last one that I picked up was more like a an over-handled pastry dough and was filled with Nutella. Very very disappointing and sad because they used to be so, so ... scrumptious. Better than Cobbs. I did return when their sign tempted me with spicy black bean soup. Food is not bad (fresh sandwiches & soup), but the staff can be terrible. I recently placed an order over the phone and the man taking the order was talking to other people while on the phone with myself (it was hard to know if/when he was speaking to me). ... At the end of the conversation, instead of saying goodbye or wrapping up our phone call he just hung up once my order was placed. I have also had the wait staff randomly sit at the table I was eating at just to "rest". Strange. They used to have lovely women working there, but since hiring new staff the service is slow/frazzled and at times rude, and the food seems a bit more pricey. Spectacular soup, great service, and a great location. I can't praise the family recipe for the Braised Beef Noodle Soup enough. I'm going to make this a regular spot moving forward - they do things right here!

I've been going to Took's for nearly a decade. Shortly after their move to the new location across the street, I noticed a major employee turnover and a decrease in the quality in their food and an increase in prices. Surprise, new owners. A shattered gem in this neighbourhood. I ... will miss you, Took's. You've lost a regular. I hope the previous owners are happily retired.
