The French Table - Vancouver, British Columbia

Ordered: Scallops espelette - great scallops on a fairly nice sauce. Duck cassoulet - Duck was good, sausage tasted too much of char, otherwise pretty good. Coq au vin - My first time I've had this dish and I was disappointed. I was hoping for something with rich wine flavour. The chicken was ... fine but the sauce was a bit too bland. The egg noodles too sparse to soak up the sauce, but they're happy to provide some more bread for that purpose. Chocolat mousse - I thought it was pretty good. The mousse you'd see in a Chez Christophe's cake is superior, but this is still a good dessert. Tarte Tatin (special) - I really enjoyed it. Delicious apples with a little crust at the bottom and dipping in the two garnish sauces gave nice variety in flavour. The pastry was soaked in sauce, so don't expect flakiness. Total $130 plus tip. The service was incredible. Very attentive, humorous, and helpful. I just wish I'd enjoyed our entrees more. Regardless, I'll probably give French Table another try. Read more

I went here for dine out and had a mixed bag of experience. The owner was very friendly and the service was great, but the food wasn't up to my expectations. My course menu consisted of the duck terrine for the appetizer, the white fish (sole) on a lemon butter sauce ... as the main course, and the creme caramel for dessert. I quite enjoyed the duck terrine but the salad on the side felt a bit generic. I was unfortunately disappointed by the main dish - the fish tasted a bit bland and I felt that the almond chips were almost a distraction to the whole dish. The rice was pretty tasty, though - with richness of the butter, it was easily the best part of my dish. The dessert was also just okay. It was a bit too sweet for me but that will likely depend on your personal taste. Overall, I came away from this experience hoping for something more. Food - 1/5 Atmosphere - 2/5 Service - 2/5 Value - 2/5 Would I go back? - No We had saw a lot of good reviews about this place and decided to give it a go. We went on a Wednesday around 6:30pm with a reservation but it was quite empty in the restaurant being a ... holiday season I was quite surprised. The service was good at the beginning but things slowly slipped away. We had ordered 1 appetizer and 4 entrees to share between 3 people. As I’ve always done that in the past. Surprisingly our server missed one of the entrees. They didn’t repeat the order back to us either, and never came to check up on us how the food was. The server we had was very knowledgeable of the restaurant’s food but came off quite cold and dismissive. There was another older gentleman there (presumably the manager or owner), we tried to get their attention a couple of times, he briefly made eye contact but didn’t come over and just let the waiter deal with us when he was free. The food was actually quite disappointing. The escargot appetizer was very salty. The calf liver was the only dish that’s passable. The beef Wellington came in a puff pastry but the steak lacked a good crusty sear. The nisçoise salad’s boiled eggs were over cooked with a gray ring around the yolk. And surprisingly being a French restaurant they use Kalamata olives instead of nisçoise olives which is what the dish is named after. The bouillabaisse was by far the worst I’ve had, it was way over cooked. All the shrimp, fish and etc were dry, rubbery and tasted like freezer burn. The broth didn’t have any flavour other than salt. All the accompany vegetables could also use some attention. The beans look and taste like they came out from a can. The desserts were probably the best dishes of the evening. Atmosphere was cozy and had some interesting features, but not so sure about the glass table tops. As many reviewers pointed out already, atmosphere and services were good but food left you scratching the head a bit for the price being charged. I understand it is a gourmet premium restaurant but it doesn’t wow you in anyway with the food itself. Just… mid. Coq au vin was ... on the dry side - definitely cooked for too long. Beef Wellington had lovely flakey pastry but also overcooked beef that looked grey in colour. Tuna salad had 3 tiny pieces of tuna on - rest were just handful of random kitchen greens. Not worth the cost. Professional waiters who were delightful thus I tipped well - just not blown away with the food. Read more

Coming in for Saturday brunch, my only regret was not ordering their mussels and side of fries as I saw them being served to the table next to us. Although their brunch is delicious, and also very well presented, I think that French Table is enjoyed best for their lunch ... and dinner items. Comfortable for groups for up to 6 people. Very cozy atmosphere and good quality service. Wheelchair accessible, no stairs leading into the restaurant or bathrooms. Brunch wasn't busy but I'm sure that their evenings can be, so call in advance to book a table. Read more
