We went to The Flying Pig Olympic Village to celebrate our friends’ birthday. We made a reservation for Wednesday evening and it was not busy at all, but we had a large table of 9. We ordered the ceasar beverage, the seafood paella, the trout special, and a variety of appetizers ... to share. Food was well staggered with drinks coming first, then appetizers, then main. The Caesar was really delicious and it was kind of like drinking a bit of hot sauce with each sip. Presentation of food was beautiful; however, taste wise, it wasn’t anything special. The seafood paella was very well, more a risotto than a paella which was a bit strange. There was a variety of appetizers we ordered including crab and shrimp croquette, chilli rubbed skirt steak, salt and pepper squid, bone marrow cheesy bread, and crispy Brussels sprouts. My favourite was definitely the salt and pepper squid. The crispy Brussels sprouts tasted a bit burnt, and the bone marrow cooled down too quickly to enjoy its taste. Trip was our server and he was very nice, attentive, and joked along with us. We also brought a cake in which he was able to cut up and serve to all the party members. Bills for appetizers were also split according to the members of our party which was very fair and not many restaurants would be willing to do that. Good ambience and vibes. No super loud music. Pigging out… If memory serves me correctly, the last time I been to this Piggy place was in Gastown (yeah been awhile). Decided to come by the new location on West 2nd for a quick late lunch before my king crab dinner reservation which was 2 hours away (yeah I feel sorry ... for my stomach sometimes). Easily found paid street parking right out front. Greeted by the friendly staffs and were led to the table. The bar with high tables were to the front, dining area on the middle, kitchen to the back. A nice little casual contemporary style place. Here were the food I ordered; 1. TFP Bacon bourbon Caesar drink. Pretty decent. 2. Pineapple guava waltz. Nice little drink for the ladies. 3. Salt & pepper Humboldt squid. Pretty flavour and very tender. Good little appy for drinking. 4. PEI mussels and frites (entree size). Pretty tasty but unfortunately the mussel meats were tiny, if they aren’t plump and juicy, to me it’s a failed (yes I understand it depends on season, but regardless still paid for it). 5. West coast seafood paella. It’s okay but I definitely wouldn’t categorize this as a paella, it’s more of a risotto. (I was hoping for a nice paella lol). 6. Beef short rib added extra bone marrow (extra $9.25). The short rib was really tender and flavourful, the bone marrows were good but had so little amount on each one. This is a nice little casual place to have a few drinks and catchup on things. The staffs were pretty friendly and attentive. As for the food, nice flavours to most of the dishes but could be better in terms of more selective quality (the mussels), don’t wander too far off from tradition (the paella), and don’t be afraid to give a little (the bone marrows were too shallow). Stopped by flying pig for their happy hour! They have all day happy hour on Mondays and Thursdays! I tried their spicy margarita, mussels and meatballs. The spicy margarita was nice and got spicier towards the end. Meatballs were cooked well and the sauce was amazing. We came here for early NYE and were told that we had two hours for our table. Normal these days anyways. The restaurant was decorated with balloons for the event and it was super dark. Not sure if that is the norm but it made for my terrible pictures. Sorry. Service ... was friendly and speedy. When we asked for a couple minutes with our menus, we weren’t forgotten about. Our drinks and food came very promptly. We ordered two appetizers: the braised meatballs and organic beet and arugula salad. My meatball loving family appreciated the meatballs and the salad was nicely presented but didn’t have a very memorable dressing. For our mains we ordered Chef Erik’s Veal Piccata, Westcoast Seafood Paella and Wild Mushroom Papparadelle. The Paella was a good portion and very flavourful. The Veal was very typical. Good just not outstanding. A little tart. The Pappardelle was also like the veal. Good. But nothing outstanding. All in all a good casual restaurant.
