Miku - Toronto, Ontario

Had the summerlicious lunch at Miku and had mixed feelings leaving the restaurant. While the service was great, I didn’t find the quality of food justifying the high price tag. Ordered the Miku Zen, Aburi set, and green opera for dessert. The salmon in the Miku zen was probably the ... worst part of the meal, it was super dry and the wasabi sauce was really overpowering. The rest of the set was okay, and I did really like the maguro tartare. Aburi plate is typical for what you can expect at a higher end Japanese place, but I found the sauces for the oshi to be a bit too creamy. The rice used for the sushi also wasn’t great and was hard and broke apart pretty easily. The dessert was good and I enjoyed it a lot. Went in without a reservation a couple months ago and had the tasting course with a friend. I also ordered the wine/drink pairings, my friend just ordered a single cocktail. I do have to say this makes for an expensive meal coming in around $250-300 depending on if you get ... the drink pairings Everything was fantastic and I was incredibly full and satisfied by the end of my meal. The service was great as well. The atmosphere was a bit underwhelming. Seated at the high top tables you can essentially see the full dining area and while there was still a fair number of diners while we were there the restaurant somehow felt empty (for the lack of a better word). The problem at this price point is that the food needs to taste "wow" and I don't think Miku achieved that. I've had better sushi at at least half the price. We had the chef combo. Overall, the sushi tastes ok but the side dish isn't great. The scallops tasted nicely ... with the sauce but I don't think the cucumbers go well with it (it was a bit bitter and distracting - doesn't highlight the scallop taste as much). The green tea opera cake was great and structured well to have a well-balanced tasty & fresh bite. We also ordered the oysters since my friend was from out of town and craved. This is one of the best Japanese restaurants I’ve tried. The sea food is so fresh and tasty. The portions are small compared to the price. But that might be because of how tasty the food was that we wanted more of it. They have amazing drinks and desserts. ... We have visited multiple times and each time, we had to try to dessert.
