Dunn’s Famous Express - Toronto, Ontario

Great sandwich. Probably one of the best places to get the Montreal smoked meats outside of Montreal. If you have the time, I recommend coming by and getting the Ruben.

I came here for a Montreal smoked meat sandwich out of curiosity as to how this express location in Toronto compares to the full service location I'm downtown Ottawa. The restaurant was empty, which was not a great first impression, but the staff were friendly and almost seemed worried that I ... wouldn't enjoy my experience. At the end, both employees asked me how I liked the food and even asked for a good review, which was somewhat concerning. Without further ado, the most important part of a restaurant review: the food. Montreal smoked meat sandwich: For those who've been fortunate to have eaten at the likes of Katz's in Toronto or New York, or Schwartz's in Montreal, or even Dunn's in Ottawa, this sandwich pales in comparison. Objectively however, it still has merit. The beef had some flavour, but it was somewhat boring and tough. The meat is not smoked in house, rather shipped in from Montreal and reheated by steam, which likely causes the toughness. It's also not sliced very thin, leading to a somewhat bulky and chewy texture. For the bread, I would have liked a stronger rye bread flavour, but it was certainly passable. Not bad. Smoked meat is thick and juicy, but missing something from the Montreal experience. More time brining? Slower cook? Not sure. It's tasty, and even the regular is a packed sandwich.

I've been to this location 4 times now, and don't think I will be back again. The actual smoked meat is decent, I've definitely had better but it's not bad at all. The quality of the rye bread is not great. I've had sandwiches there at the store and delivered ... and the bread always falls apart in mere moments. The french fries were very good the first two times I was there, but have been under cooked the last two times. The amount of meat you receive in a side order of smoked meat has also gotten smaller from when I first tried this location (seems smaller each time). Read more

I grew up in Montreal and grew up on Dunn’s smoke meat! This place was just like home ! The food was amazing my wife smoked meat burger was so good and my Ruben was also great! Looking forward for my next visit! My only negative comment is the restaurant ... was freezing cold. But if love good old fashioned Montreal deli it’s a must go !!!! Read more
