L’Express – The Bloor Street Diner - Toronto, Ontario

I tried to figure out how to send an email to Bloor Street Diner directly before posting a review, but unfortunately, the only address I could find was one for making reservations. There is a phone number but you would probably just reach someone on the floor. The reason that I ... hesitated at first about writing publicly is because I've had good experiences here, in the past. The only other really bad experience was on Mother's Day a couple of years ago. They lowered the standards of food and service , perhaps to accommodate the volume of customers, but that is not the way to do things. I wouldn't go back for Mother's Day again, but I did give them another chance. Today, January 2nd of 2017, a friend and I went by in the mid-afternoon for dessert and drinks. Our server, whose name appeared on the receipt (and whom I would be happy to identify if contacted by a manager or owner) was so unpleasant and unprofessional, that it was almost laughable. An older couple next to us looked over at one point and the gentleman said, "I guess she's not happy to be working today." We all have bad days, but we can't go around making it bad for others, especially at a place of work. I am not discouraging people from trying Bloor Street Diner out. Maybe letters like mine will prompt the owners to re-emphasize the importance of respect, basic courtesy and professionalism. The food in the cafe as well as the dining room, is generally enjoyable. First time going here, there was a receipt in my girlfriend's wrap. The staff (her name was Erin I believe) was very helping in replacing the order and our diner was free. Food was pretty expensive for what you get. Spinach salad with candied pears was around 20$. Wouldn't recommend heading ... here. DO NOT BE FOOLED BY THESE FIVE STAR REVIEWS, people get paid to do that. Ate there last night (Feb 15, 2016) with a group of four - not a single person enjoyed their over priced low quality airport food. Worst club sandwich I have ever had and what ... seemed like day old lettuce in my caesar salad. Would not eat there again or recommend to anybody. Walk to almost any other restaurant in the area. I have been a BSD customer for many years, since from way back when it was on the north side of Bloor in the Holt Renfrew building. I liked it as an informal, reasonable-value, okay-food bistro in a very convenient location, especially if you're going to the Varsity theatres. We used ... to be frequent customers, but it had probably been the better part of a year since were last there - since we rarely go to the movies there any more. We had dinner on the western, bistro-side. We were struck by how much the menu prices had increased. A half litre of cheap, poor house wine was $27. The food was way over-priced for what was offered, much less for what was actually delivered. I had fish and chips, and the fish was doughy and under-cooked. When i voiced my dissatisfaction near the end of the meal (when the server next appeared), the server looked confused about what to do and asked whether "I wanted to order something else". No hint of apology or any make-good. Poor food, high prices, incompetent wait staff. I suggest you look elsewhere. BTW, I just looked at the reviews that add up to the high ratings -- for the most part, it seems the detailed reviews are poor, and there is a whole lot of 5-star reviews with no detail. Are these reviews even serious. I trusted these reviews and had a dinner here with my friend. The server recommended seafood pasta and daily fish which was on a special menu so we decided to order them. Seafood pasta, randomly has some paste of garlic which was super spicy and ... unpleasant. Daily fish had risotto which was undercooked and shrimps that were literally burned.and tasted like ashes. The price came out to be $50 and wasn't even worth $5.
