Golden Phoenix - St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador

It pains me to leave this review. I've loved this place since its hey-day and dies for a greasy ol feed. The food, not the worst, but slipped immensely. The service is non-existent. What kills me is the condition of the dining room. Doubt there has been a bucket of ... bleach in the room in years. Walls are grimy, signage is tattered and gross, carpets so sticky that you can hear people walk. It makes me wonder what it's like in the kitchen and other places not seen. What happened to Golden Phoenix??? The Missus and I had 3 meals at the Golden Phoenix in 2016 during our visit to St. John's. The food was excellent and the restaurant was hopping then. We highly suggested to our Westcoast Express traveling group on our recent trip but were so highly disappointed. ... It was downright embarrassing taking our group there. The food taste and quality were terrible. Lots of battered food and water downed soups. It was definitely not worth the buffet price of almost $30 per person. It appeared the restaurant was running on its past reputation and something happened after covid. Definitely will be giving Golden Phoenix a skip the next time in St. John's and trying other eateries in the area. Read more

First time going there in about 5 years. I was so excited but that quickly changed. Our waitress was emotionless and quite honestly- looked clearly extremely depressed which resulted in horrible and awkward/mopey service from her. The plates at buffet were soaking wet with pieces of noodles left on them ... and red colored water from diluted half washed cherry sauce I assume. The food itself was absolutely horrible with little taste and small variety. There were HAIRS and other flying things on the huge container of cherry sauce. I will most definitely never be returning again and will make sure everyone I know don't either! Worst dining experience I've had in a long time, if not the worst ever. The food was bland or salty. The selection was very poor. The service was mediocre at best. I particularly enjoyed the large man going around in a tank top bussing tables. The icing on the cake ... though was when my daughter and I went for dessert and there was this horrible smell coming from the washrooms which was located just behind the desert area. That smell was so bad it turned my stomach and forced my daughter to run outside early while I paid way too much for a bad experience and got a shrug and in I'm sorry when I told them about the smell. If you want Chinese food the food court in the mall is a better option and a cleaner eating area as well. Read more

First of all I want to commend this business for daring to open their buffet back up following the pandemic. Congratulations. However the food quality has gone downhill. I feel bad writing this as I loved going there. Nothing on the buffet was of the quality I expected. The chicken ... balls were not fresh at all. It was frozen to fryer and not homemade. Won tons were burnt up. Won ton soup was cold. The beef with broccoli was just ok but the rest of the items were sub par. Hopefully they will improve because it’s the last buffet left and with this quality it will not last. Please improve. Read more
