Matcha Cafe Maiko - Richmond, British Columbia

My favourite matcha softserve and come here everytime Im in richmond. However today I was disappointed with the quality of delivery. I was very upset, and really tarnished my view of the service, as I would have been fine to wait longer for better quality or at least been told of ... the situation. But I just had to watch it happen. They made the order behind me first as they ordered a softserve and I ordered a frappee and soft serve. Which I understand as they were busy. The staff gave the softserve to them, which the customer then said that they wanted to have matcha instead of kinako. Unfortunately the icecream machine needed to refill the matcha so they offered the one that was prepared for me. I then had to wait for the machine to churn a bit and the one staff looked at me frequently and quickly made mine. However the one I got did not look like the first one, it was half the size and not chilled enough so it was melting before I got it. Read more

I can't believe it's been 4 years since I started visiting this place but I've neglected to review it. This is one of my favourite dessert places in Richmond to visit. If you love matcha, you will love this place. Their soft serve is delicious, although my favourite item is the ... Maiko special as it's a decadent treat with lots of ingredients inside and soft serve on top. They occasionally change up soft serve flavours as well, so I've loved the hojicha, ube, and yuzu flavours in addition to the usual matcha. Service is pretty quick and smooth. The atmosphere is lovely as well, very warm. My only issue is that there's hardly any tables/seating inside, so if it's full you have to wait or go outside. In the summer/warmer months it's a great option to visit the playground/park outside the Richmond public market, but not so in the colder months. We tried pure Hojicha and combined Vanilla and Hojicha. Unfortunately, there’s no Matcha when we visited. Pure Hojicha has the bitterness that I love with a little hint of sweetness. Hojicha and Vanilla is a good combination for balance and more refreshing aftertaste. Service was great! She explained the menu as it was ... my first time to come here. This is a really delicious soft serve ice cream. I ordered the Maiko Special. On the day I ordered, they didn't have Vanilla ice cream so I had a mix of Matcha and Hojicha. The ice cream wasn't too sweet and it has a strong flavour. The portion is big ... so it's a good idea to share with someone. The only issue I had was that the cafe smells like Chinese herbal medicine. It's kind of funny to be at a Japanese dessert store but with the Chinese Herbal medicine smell in the air. Read more
