Mohave Smokehouse & Bar - Red Deer, Alberta

My partner and I were in Red Deer for an event from out of town and wanted to find something different from chains we could go to back home. I stumbled across Mohave and we decided to give it a try. Our server was Melissa and she was phenomenal from ... the get go. She is so funny and quick witted, it made our experience one that we will be telling everyone and their dog about. She checked in on us at perfect times, and joked with us like we had known her for years. Service like hers is very hard to come by nowadays. We were impressed to find that it’s locally owned and even more impressed with the food. If this is a stop on your trip, you have to try the warm apple crisp. Simply to die for. This place has a great, friendly atmosphere with wonderful service! It feels like a local place where people gather, but also well located within a number of hotels. Friends had suggested it a few times, and I finally had the opportunity to try it. I'm glad that I did, but ... hopefully, it was just a hiccup with the food - it was only OK and did not match up with the rave others shared with me. It's definitely worthy of a do over. Read more

I don't usually give low reviews like this one. To start off, our server was excellent, food was good but having to wait an hour for 2 slices of cheese cake and an apple crisp was not good. We ended up canceling our dessert order and just paying our tab. ... Our server (I forgot to ask her name) kept checking with the kitchen to see if they were ready and communicated such with us. I have spent years in the industry so understand delays when 2 large groups come in but that was not acceptable. 2 out of the 4 of us would go back to give it another shot. Read more

Ordered take out because we didn't have enough time for dine in and after getting back to our suite found there to be no utensils even though they were requested on the order. So we had to go back to get them. During ordering process it automatically defaults to 20% tip!!!! ... FOR TAKE OUT! The steak was rather chewy which is quite disappointing for a nicer restaurant. For $50+ I would have hoped for better. Maybe just bad luck on our part. Read more
