Silver Bean Café - Peterborough, Ontario

A few months ago, I was asked to sing at this venue, which only paid in tips. I was fine with that arrangement at the time, but given how poorly I was treated, I should have been paid. The experience was awful. The waitress was extremely rude to me and my ... entire family, and the event was very poorly organized. Although the owner did apologize, it was not to me directly but through someone else. They mentioned their goal for live music was to keep it on one side ( which I was not told before but only in the owners so called apology) , but music travels, especially by the lake. In my professional opinion, if you only want people to hear it in one section, don’t have live music. I did a sound check and asked at the beginning if the volume was too loud or too quiet, and since no one gave me any feedback, I continued at the same volume. They didn't tell me where to set up, so I chose a spot myself. The waitress’s rude behaviour continued throughout the performance, affecting both my mother and I. During my last song, which I had announced, the waitress came up and told me it was too loud and people were complaining. I would have had no problem turning it down, but telling me this after I announced my final song was ridiculous. The entire staff seemed unaware of what was going on, which is the owner's responsibility. I will never go back to sing or eat there again. I was so excited to try the BBQ jackfruit wrap, but was told it’s only available at the Canoe Museum location. Looking at the online menu again, it does indicate this, but in tiny letters that are easy to miss. I’d recommend making it more clear which items are available ... at which location. The waterfront location is gorgeous and the person who took our order was lovely. Unfortunately the food was inedible - me and the person I was with hate wasting food, but we left over half of our orders on our plates. It was overpriced for what it was. I’m sure this place is great for having a coffee and looking out at the lake, but I wouldn’t order food here again. And finally, the restaurant’s washroom situation (entering through the back) is definitely awkward! We tried to use the public washrooms nearby, but didn’t feel safe. Read more

The silver bean Café is a local gem. It offers outdoor seating and views of the river, beautiful tree line and has breakfast items, lunch items and Kawartha Dairy ice cream. The food is always delicious and there is consistently excellent customer service, the best hospitality, and friendly service!! I always return ... to this café when I’m visiting Kawartha Lakes! Beauty of a spot early morning- large shaded patio seating with water views. Service was extremely slow considering we were the only ones ordering at the time. Power bowl was ok but muffin was dry. The strawberry and mango smoothie were good.

A true gem of peterborough. Partner and I biked to the cafe today for some ice cream then ate it while looking out onto the water. Cafe food is always tasty, can definitely be some smaller portions especially considering the cost but everything is freshly made to order. What a ... great spot. Read more
