PORT 229 - GREAT FOOD, GREAT STAFF, GREAT SERVICE!!! My husband and I celebrated our anniversary dinner at PORT 229 Artisan Bistro last night and it was a memorable experience. We arrived around 7pm and we were welcomed by smiling staff and a warm environment. We had the option of sitting ... on the patio or indoors and we chose to sit inside. There were already several customers outside and we wanted to enjoy this time together in a quieter space. Our server Joanna welcomed us into the restaurant and gave us the choice of seating. The restaurant had huge personality despite its square footage. It was very clean, organized and not too crowded. The decor had a contemporary flare with European influences. I appreciated the exposed brick and the almost full bay of front windows. For those like myself, who enjoy people watching, details like this do not go unnoticed. We started the night out with some libations and I always start my night off with a cesear. I can honestly attest that this was by far one of the BEST cesear's I have tasted. It had just the right amount of acidity and flavour with a little punch of heat. Fantastic!! If I wasn't driving, I would have had 5 more. My husband enjoys beer and was switching between Stella and Peroni. His only complaint was that his Stella's were not served in their traditional stein...which he jokingly overlooked. We had previously viewed the menu online, so we knew what we wanted before we even stepped through the door. We couldn't wait for Joanna to take our order until she surprised us with the specials...a wrench in the spokes. LOL We originally wanted to order the braised short ribs and the salmon for our mains, but switched the salmon for the steak special because it just sounded too good to resist. Steak with gnocchi?? Gnocchi? Starchy swaddled baby bundles of joy? Yes please. Our meal started with a loaf of bread drizzled with olive oil and toasted rosemary and thyme. We ate the whole loaf in under a minute. I would have liked the loaf to have been a tad warmer to enjoy a crispier bite, but I still enjoyed it. The olive oil used was delicious, lots of flavour and not bitter. Next came the calamari appetizer and a cesear salad. The cesear was good, well dressed, romaine lettuce crisp, croutons and bacon crispy. The calamari on the other hand deserves a bit more praise. Most calamari is over battered and overcooked but this was not the case. A light dusting of gave each bite a little crunch but didn't overwhelm each tender morsel and turn it into a greasy basket of fast food munchies. They were delicate and well complimented by the by the sauces provided. A lemon wedge would have been an added bonus. Our mains arrived with Joanna and they looked and tasted great. The highly recommended braised short ribs were moist, juicy and fall-apart-at-the-sight-of-your-fork goodness. I was a bit disappointed with the mashed potatoes because they needed a little more seasoning but I understand how sometimes it's better to be light on salt and add more to the individual's liking. My husband was kind enough to share his perfectly cooked medium steak and gnocchi with a side of veg. We both enjoyed the steak but the gnocchi stole the show. Really well done and with the gravy..even better. Just when our maximum load capacity was dangerously close to the brink, the staff brought us a complimentary dessert to celebrate our anniversary that could not be overlooked. A slice of heaven that rested on a caramel and chocolate drizzled canvas. It was a 'death-by-chocolate' experience that sealed the meal with a proverbial kiss. The manager came by our table to congratulate us. She was a lovely woman who was approachable and appreciative towards the clientele. Thank you for making us feel very special and helping us celebrate. I would highly recommend PORT 229 to friends, family and anyone else who took the time to read this review ;) Read more
Food was good but service was just terrible. They have a few tables inside and a few outside and a very limited menu so I am not sure what the issue was, the inexperienced waitress or the inexperienced staff in the kitchen. I called on the Friday to make reservations ... for Saturday, when we got there, they had no reservation. We sat outside only to have to move because the air conditioning unit they had above the awning was dripping down our backs. They put bread on the table yet no serving plates or napkins/utensils. We asked for them but by the time she brought them to us, we had already eaten the bread. Said she would bring a cooler for the white wine, never brought it. Half the appetizers came out for half the group and the other half of the group had to wait for theirs. Same thing happened with the entrees so the group really didn't eat together. There is a lot of restaurant competition in Port Credit........ I would never go back. Read more
Beyond terrible. Will never go back. Lost our reservation for six and had to eat on the street. Arrived at 7pm and didn't leave till 9:30. Service was very slow and server was not experienced. Courses were not delivered to all six of us at ... the same time. Wanted to charge us $2 for another order of bread when we were already spending $300. The food was very good but I still would never go back given the overall service. POOR. POOR Read more
Somebody should tell the parking authority they need to increase the max parking time because this place takes more than that to serve you. The server came to us an hour and a half after we sat down and told us it would have been smart to make a reservation, ... even though there was 3 people inside and 4 people outside. I could've ordered my food, walked to burger's priest, finished eating, walked back, sat and had water at this place (because that's all they give you for 2 hours), digested my burger AND fries AND milkshake and still wouldn't have had my food. Basically, come at 9am if you expect to leave by 2 Read more

Went to Port 229 today for brunch, overall, the food was decent but the service was lacking to say the least. From the get go, when I called to make a reservation, I had to leave a message. The lady that called back was very abrupt and I was unimpressed ... with the way she talked to me. But we went anyways, the place is small, smaller than what I thought a "bistro" was. I went with my family of 4, the 3 of them had eggs of different variety and I had the French toast. The meals were good enough, the French toast was definitely the best. However, the experience was just soured by our "waitress" (she was the only employee there so I don't know if she's the manager or owner or something). She was very unpleasant. Never came to check on us after dropping off our food. And seemed to be paying attention to the other 2 tables. She really spoiled our experience and I don't believe she should have any kind of customer service job. Read more
