My experience at Lena’s was most pleasant. I was excited to have found a place that serves excellent Trinidadian food. I thoroughly enjoyed my doubles—the filling was so fresh and the chickpea mixture as well as the chutney was bursting with flavor! And the scotch bonnet pepper sauce was oh-so-fresh ... and supremely flavorful! It was the best doubles I have had in my life! I got a dhalpuri roti stuffed with pumpkin and it was out of this world! I’m a regular at Lena’s but the food is sometimes hit or miss. The doubles are always great, however, the chicken pie I received today was neither tasty, crispy, nor did it have enough chicken to be considered a chicken pie. For $6 I’d expect a decent amount of chicken in ... the filling. What I received was 95% chickpeas and 5% chicken- two bite sized pieces of boneless chicken (what appears to be curry) for a pie of this size? Additionally, it did not deliver on taste. I also purchased bake and smoked herring a few weeks back and many parts of the bake were severely undercooked and raw. The smoked herring tasted great but seems like it wasn't 100% herring and may have been mixed with another type of smoked fish. I brushed the undercooked bake off and figured I’d try it again another day to see if it would be better. However, after my chicken pie experience, I doubt I’d be willing to give that another go. Had a great lunch here today. First time trying Lena’s food and we really enjoyed it. I had the boneless goat on rice and it was a great portion. The pholourie was fresh, soft and hot…just the way I like them. We also had a curry chicken roti and it ... was huge. The prices are very reasonable and the people there were so wonderful and friendly. It’s a cozy little place to sit down with friends and enjoy a great meal, we will be back for sure! Read more
