Shanghai Shikumen Fine Cuisine - Markham, Ontario

I'll try other Shanghai else cuisine just to do some comparison. Pics showed what we ordered and here's some thoughts: 1. Xiaolongbao was pretty authentic, but needed to be consumed fast or the juice will dry out. 2. The fried fish (熏鱼）were little too salty and it tasted fishy, due to the ... fact that it was certainly made of frozen carps. Will not recommend. 3. Shengjianbao (生煎包）has the right look but the filling tasted strange, like stale pork. 4. Wontons were pretty good. 5. The tofu w/crabmeat was a total disaster, only tasted fishy and dry crabmeat, even though tofu was cooked well. 6. Fried Spring rolls with pork and napa cabbage filling again too salty and not the right taste. I felt like they were taken from the freezer. Service and atmosphere were great. Not sure if I'd come back. I've lived and worked in Shanghai for more than 20 years since the mid - 80s, I'm sure I qualify to provide inputs objectively to the Shanghai dishes we were served. Delicious Huaiyang cuisine, lots of techniqie showcased in the tofu noodle dish: soft buttery texture in each ingredient happily immersed in flavourful chicken broth. My wife who grew up in the region told me the food served reminded her of going to Sunday brunch with her grandparents.

They do offer a variety and different style of Chinese food, the service is great and nice, the portion of food is good as well. There are so many tables and rooms which can provide for some big groups

We ordered 2 dimsums, 1 noodles, 1 rice cake and a 8 treasure rice as dessert. The stream buns and pan fried bums were hot and fresh. They were yummy. The noodles and rice cake were not bad but not much ingredients. The dessert rice was ... yummy. The bill was around $80. A bit on the expensive side. I'm not a fan of their member pricing. We came here for the dumplings but they ended up being a side note to the dishes we ordered. We just loved the braised eggplant- was so delicious! We also loved the egg meatballs. Scallion noodles were good as well. Looking forward to coming back to try other dishes. No ... idea about authenticity, but just know we enjoyed the food. Read more
