Fat Tuna Japanese Bistro - Maple Ridge, British Columbia

My first and only time here so far was in Feb and it was not very good. I ordered the Buddha N Buddhist Monk dinner combo and was disappointed that I didn't get any prawn tempura. When I asked about it, I was told it doesn't come with it because ... it's a vegetarian box! Even on the online menu, it says it comes with 2pc prawn tempura!!!! The spicy miso soup was pretty good and the house salad was alright, but the tofumite roll and the vegetable nigiri left a lot to be desired. We here came on opening night and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. The sushi was top of the line and the appetizers/mains were nothing like we've ever seen before. The owner and chef of this place used to run a sushi restaurant in Coquitlam under the ... same name but moved here to pursue his dream of running a Japanese Izakaya. Him and his staff were all extremely genuine and friendly. I would highly recommend coming here for lunch (they have an amazing fish burger set menu) or for dinner/drinks after work. It opens later than most restaurants in the area and the ambiance + food are just great. Great for large groups. I can't rave enough about this place! We will be coming back often for sure. Had to try this out as we heard about this on Facebook. Went there on Saturday at 6pm and were the only ones there, although a few couples arrived later in the meal. Surprisingly large restaurant, classy decor, excellent service, and all the food we ordered came quickly. Surprised by ... the Sashimi/Ngiri combo, as it came with salad and a miso soup (we opted for spicy miso and it was good). We want to come back again to try more things off of the menu. Read more

One of my favourite restaurants in Coquitlam so when I found out the owners moved to Maple Ridge I was so happy!! Food and service is always great and the owners are very friendly !! A MUST TRY! Delicious food and wonderful service. They put a unique twist on their food being Japanese/French inspired. We tried the sous vide chicken, buta bara (pork belly) and orange scallop, which were all amazing! They also have sushi, teriyaki and appetizers, and great deals for their lunch and ... dinner menus.
