I went to lunch this week with four friends to celebrate a couple of birthdays. By far, to me, the best part of the restaurant was the gorgeous building, terrasse, and gardens. The high ceilings and natural wood, brick, stone, and lush plants gave it a ... homey, cozy atmosphere. In regards to the service, I found it to be neither exceptional or poor. It was simply average; although I do appreciate having the water glasses regularly filled. The menu was in French only. An English version (or even English in a smaller font) would have been very appreciated. Having a friend translate the menu for me, I thought several items sounded delicious. I chose the apple/onion/pistachio salad to start. The onions were cut thicker than the apples (wrong ratio) and the candied pistachios were stale. This was edible, but not very enjoyable. Unable to recall which kind of fish I ordered, when it arrived, it was a big dry dense block of flavorless fish that had the awful texture of being cooked much too long and reheated in the microwave, and then tried to be masked with a lot of mediocre heavy sauce. The rice’s texture was also not quite on par and reminded me more of bad boxed Rice-a-Roni from the 1970’s that tried to be bougie with a new flavor, and the vegetables were very bland and slightly overcooked. As I looked around at the other’s dishes, it felt more like going to your grandparent’s favorite tried-and-true low-expectation restaurant than one of today, especially in such a big foodie city, keeping up with the new food-is-life generation and making skill, creativity, and flavor a priority. Everything seemed to look cooked without expertise and covered up with heavy sauces and/or cheese to hide this. You know when you treat yourself to a nice cappuccino after a meal (especially when in a French or Italian restaurant where you know they should take coffee seriously), and then it comes, and even that is “meh”…drinkable, but just not great… and disappointing? This was my experience here. When the bill came, I had to laugh at myself. A beautiful atmosphere and mediocre-at-best food does not justify the prices they charge; it simply felt like a “poser” of a French country restaurant in a charming eatery. Read more
