Modern Shanghai Bistro - Halifax, Nova Scotia

Had a quick meal of noodles. A little disappointed. Their name is Shanghai Bistro, but the menu contains mostly Shangxi food. As a Chinese, I barely see the connection between these two styles. The food does taste as what I expected.

The food is quite authentic coming from someone whose favourite Chinese food comes from Shanghai region of China. Very old school cooking style (despite it's name) with a very distinct westernised flavor and lack of authentic ingredients. For example the spicy peppered squid was obviously store bought calamaris from ... frozen. Despite this it was a very decent effort and quite tasty especially the Shanghai stir fried noodles and the honey garlic spare ribs. The most authentic dish was the stewed beef with hard boiled eggs, I tried to order the kidney appetiser but they had no ingredients to make it. I noticed this little place when I left an appointment near by. Stopped in for some quick lunch take out. Food was good and was ready quickly. I would go again.

Delicious food. And an extremely fair priced bacon and egg breakfast.

Chicken fried rice is pretty decent. The other dishes, well, you are lucky if you are a lover of onion, bell pepper and cabbage, because they make up 70% of any dish that, by all means, has nothing to do with these ingredients. Seriously, the worst Kung Pao chicken I ... ever ate. Read more
