We found this hidden gem by accident. My friend was at the Collision Conference downtown Toronto and I live out in Mississauga. The restaurant is half way. My friend KJ is Indian but lives in Austin and he says there is no good Indian food. He needed to get his fix ... and The Feast of Dilli has good reviews. We had the Paneer Tika, Achari Paneer, Chana Masala, Garlic Naan and Kulcha with Aloo (potato). The Achari Paneer had depths of flavour I haven’t experienced before. This wasn’t your typical butter chicken takeout place — which is the equivalent of a cheese pizza — the safe choice. You can tell the chef has a higher level of skills than what you’re going to find in most butter chicken take out places. KJ said the chef is from the north and they just cook better than the south. The paneer tikka was fried squares of paneer win charred peppers, onions and tomatoes with a mint chutney. Anytime you put cheese and charred peppers together it’s going to be a revelation. I had warm burrata cheese with charred peppers at a small restaurant called the River and Post last year in Staatsburg, NY last summer and it was the best thing I ate all year. We ordered the fresh garlic naan crispy. We tore strips off and ate the paneer dishes with it. The owner — PVR -- yes that’s his name - served Kingfisher beer in frosted glasses. The beer was fresh and went well with the spicy food. There is ample parking but you may need to drive around the block. The area is up and coming. It has a certain bohemian chic that left the Queen Street West area decades ago. You may not want to make friends with random strangers late at night. PVR is an excellent host and every Indian restaurant since feels like a letdown. The Achari Paneer lives up to it’s reputation. I’ll be back with more friends in the next couple of weeks. Read more
