Great Indian food.. Great service. Went there a Saturday and buffet was not expensive for some authentic Indian food..

I am glad that there is a semi-neutral food review option, because there are some things I like about this place- but there are some things I don't. I'd like to note however that I used to eat at this place A LOT a few years ago but it appears they ... changed management, and switched over the food style and flavors. Since then, I struggle to retain my ability to support Maurya Palace as a customer. I have been eating Indian food for years, but this was my Go-TO place. It was such a gem, because almost nobody knew it was there- you could almost have an entire restaurant to yourself when you went in. It was quaint, but the food flavor was just spectacular. I have only ordered from here a couple of times since 'something' changed with the restaurant. I went in person, one day with my brother, and we ordered a multitude of dishes- none of which we finished because the flavor was off. The worst offender, I remember now, being the vegetarian spinach dish. I have to say that this still remains true after ordering again this time around- I have ordered their Daal Makhani, and a Shahee Paneer dish, with rice to place it on. Something just doesn't taste right about the Shahee Paneer, it's very tomato based, and really lacks the subtle creaminess and slight infusions of flavours that I have come to expect honestly from a dish like that. It's almost like taking a can of tomato soup, and plopping tiny old paneer pieces into it. The Daal Makhani dish was equally as disappointing, it's just not rich, and creamy, and flavorful. I found it dull, and flavorless. Perhaps I am just spoiled, because when I order Indian food I come to expect a blast of sheer blends of aromatic tastes and flavors to explode in my mouth. Maybe I am just picky after having eaten at pretty much every Indian restaurant Edmonton has to offer as well... But these dishes just aren't doing themselves justice. The flavors are off, and the spices and the blends just aren't there to make them their own, or to make me want to finish my plate. This never used to be the case. I used to be able to walk in and grab a curry or a sauce, and my mouth would be exploding with ecstasy. This was true even for the buffet. But something has changed... for my once favorite little restaurant. Something has taken away from the greatness that should be your Indian food. But as I said I don't want to just leave this as a bad review, I wish there was a neutral zone- because while your curries and sauces seem to be off, for the vegetarian side that is- There is something that you make better than ANYONE ELSE in all of Edmonton- and that is your Paneer Pakora. My WORD- I have NEVER had such tasty Paneer Pakora you guys soak it in spices, and you load it up with flavour, and then deep fry the cheese to perfection in your crispy batter. It's soft, yet crispy...it's flavorful. It's so divine. Even when I come back every time to re-order, if I do- this is always consistent. Your paneer pakora is always stunningly beautiful, in flavour, texture and everything. Other restaurants have really dry or very bland paneer pakora mixes. But you don't miss a beat there. Equally with your vegetarian samosas, there is flavor. There are whole spices in there. I can take a bite out of it, you have a beautiful crispy crust, and it's done right. It's got a bit of a kick to it (not too much, but just enough)- which many other Indian restaurants have failed to do. Many others don't put the flavors or the spices in, and they use very thin phyllo pastry. But not you, Maurya Palace... you keep it real with your samosas. Flavour locked in, crispy crunchy dough right there. The only thing that keeps disappointing though are your sauces. Bring back the flavor, infuse the delicious beauty of your Indian cuisine back into those dishes. Don't be afraid to spice it up, make it more creamy, blend in those flavors. I'd love to come back to being a loving customer again- but I need that flavour, and that beautiful harmony of taste bud ecstasy to come back to do that. Read more

Fantastic restaurant, and gluten free friendly! We have been coming to this restaurant for over 10 years now, and are always happy with the friendly service and wonderful food. Recently diagnosed with a food allergy, I have been apprehensive about eating at restaurants, but I can tell you they went ... above and beyond to accommodate us! They were able to clearly identify which foods were safe, and went as far to bring a couple of gluten free alternatives to the table for us to try! My favourite Indian cuisine in town! The owner is very nice and the service is great. The food is always top quality, though I order off of the menu, not the buffet, so I don't know how that is.

Now, I haven't really had Indian food anywhere else, but it doesn't change the fact that its my favourite lunch buffet place to go to. The main waiter (there for lunches anyways) is super friendly, and remembers you when you come in again. The food tastes fantastic, and at a ... very good price ($12, if I remember correctly) and the whole setting for the place is very nicely decorated. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a good Indian lunch buffet. Read more
