Towa Sushi & Lounge - Calgary, Alberta

We planned to have “All you can eat” (Friday to Sunday) as promoted on the signs outside. We arrived at 7:15 and they said All you can eat is not available as it requires 90 mins and they were closing at 8:30. Okay. I was a little annoyed, but accepted ... it. We ordered from the menu. Sushi size is huge, so do not over order - I wish they said something when we ordered. We over ordered, so we wasted quite a bit of food. I am okay with taking leftovers home, but their sushi just weren’t good enough for eating them as leftovers. The sushi were not well put together, they fell apart as we picked them up - what a mess. We had rice everywhere on the table. Most rolls had avocados inside - I felt I ate 3 avocados by the end of the meal. Most cooked food was very bland. Sashimi were not fresh either. Me after eating Towa. Disgusting sushi, if you are looking for a place to waste money, Towa is the place for you. They serve sushi with a 95% rice to 5% fish ratio, paper thin. When a second order was placed for my sashimi, they wouldn’t bring out our fish ... unless we “finished” the comedically large pile of rice. If I could legally not pay, I would’ve. TL:DR ***AVOID THIS RESTAURANT*** Would give a zero star review if I could Food comes out extremely slowly for AYCE No time to put in more than 1 order Near impossible to get service Food was mediocre at best Did not receive half the food we ordered after sitting in the restaurant for 105 minutes & ... we needed to leave ----- A couple of weeks ago we came for for my brother's birthday. We used to love Towa's giant rolls when they were still in Mission and were looking forward to having those again. Towa has an all you can eat for $34.99 per person, which sounded like a great deal! However, this turned out to be far too good to be true. Below is a timeline of events based on the timestamps of the photos attached: 7:45 pm: Arrived and seated. Provided water but no table settings. There were about 4 other tables in the restaurant. 7:55 pm: Completed AYCE order list and gave to server. 8:15 pm: Server came to tell us that food would take more time to come out today so the 90 minute timer would not start when we placed our order. The restaurant closes at 10pm. 8:25 pm: (30 minutes since we ordered) Received tempura. Made multiple attempts to wave down server to ask for chopsticks. Server brought us only chopsticks. Had to wave another server down for plates and napkins. 8:35 pm: (40 minutes since we ordered) Received chicken teriyaki, rolls, agedashi tofu & gyoza. The chicken was cold in the middle. The rolls were not rolled properly and the rice fell apart upon picking a piece up. The agedashi tofu was soggy. 8:50 pm: Went to the bathroom and saw in the kitchen that the sushi chef was cutting filets of sashimi. 8:55 pm: (60 minutes since we ordered) Small bowl of pork belly udon arrived. 9:00 pm: Paid for dinner while waiting for sashimi to arrive so we could save some time. We were late for our movie showing. 9:20 pm: All other tables had received their sashimi. Asked server if we could get our sashimi to go since we were crunched for time. 9:25 pm: Server came back to tell us that the kitchen needed 30-60 minutes to get the sashimi ready. Again, the restaurant closes at 10:00 pm and when I had seen the filets of fish earlier, there was plenty of fish ready to be cut and served. We were completely flabbergasted. I have never been to any Japanese restaurant where it takes 30-60 minutes to prepare sashimi. The server offered us a 20% discount the next time that we came. Upon seeing our hesitation, she offered for 1 person’s ACYE to be free for the next visit. This was the worst service I have ever had. We had to leave because we were already late for our movie and did not receive half the food we ordered. We will not be returning and I would direct diners to go elsewhere for Japanese food. Good value for the small hot pot and nice sushi. I particularly liked the larger than bite-size rolls. Nice decor, but the place was dead on a weeknight. Completely empty, no vibe.

Really great value, and really great sushi. The portions were very large, but well priced, and the service was fairly attentive from the server/hostess. We ordered more than we could eat, expecting it to be regular sized rolls. Sad to see we were the only ones dining, we ate at ... around 2:15pm, maybe they are busier in the evening or around lunch.
