Sumo Lounge - Calgary, Alberta

Wonderful food and wonderful owners. As a visitor in Calgary from Toronto, John and Victoria welcomed me into their restaurant with incredible warmth, and made me feel at home and well taken care of. Not only did I enjoy the wonderful atmosphere, hospitality and fresh food, but deeply appreciated the ... owners sharing a lovely chat with me as I learned more about their history establishing this restaurant in Eu Claire market in the 80’s. John also reminisced on his fond memories of friends and family, sharing his experiences growing up as Asian Canadian immigrant in Calgary, photos from his youth, and travel adventures around the world. I was sad to hear that unfortunately with new railway construction projects underway, the Sumo Lounge will soon be demolished along with the rest of the Eu Claire market in Calgary. However, with every end comes a new beginning, so I look forward to seeing where John and Victoria will take this hidden gem next. We just did drinks on the patio. This is by far the sunniest patio in eau Claire. The beer is excellent, lots of people watching. Will update of food very soon. Have heard great reviews from my local neighbors. ... Hidden gem for sure!! Read more

As we were waiting for a movie in the complex theatre, I have mentioned to the server that we only had about 30 minutes, he instantly got us a table and suggested the quick meals from the menu. Amazing service and impressive great taste food. We had a Combo D ... and spring rolls. Delicious and fresh, despite the bad reviews I have read here I strongly recommend you to go with time and provide them a honest feedback if anything does not match your expectations. This restaurant is a gem. One of the best sushi restaurants I have been to and the best Miso soup I have ever had. Probably the closest to original Japanese sushi I have eaten in North America. If you want cold sterile safeway sushi you will be disappointed but if ... you want the real thing this is it in Calgary. Highly recommended, and although a little out of the way and in the less than inspiring Eau Claire market give this a try. I think COVID made life difficult for this small family now we and operated business please support this restaurant by visiting them. Read more
