We've tried other places occasionally, but we keep coming back to Surya because they are simply the best. This is a local restaurant run by a lovely couple. It has a cozy atnosphere and amazing food. Our family discovered this place a few weekends ago. I used to say things like "the best butter chicken is from so and so" and "the best naan bread is from so and so" etc. There are some decent Indian restaurants we have tried over the years and ... we have been fans of specific dishes at certain places. Well, Surya has topped the list on almost everything now. My wife and I LOVE Indian food. We have probably been to around 2 dozen different Indian places in Alberta, BC and Manitoba because we like to order Indian on the road as well. Without a doubt, the dishes at Surya are the absolute best we have ever tried. We've tried the Daal Makhni, Butter Chicken, Vindaloo (beef and lamb), Prawn Malai Curry and Palak Paneer as well as the Garlic Naan bread. Every single dish we tried has been the best version we've ever had from a restaurant, including the Naan bread. The dishes are so flavourful and I love that they can customize the spice levels. Asking for extra hot is ACTUALLY extra hot (I'm Korean and I want my eyes to water when I say extra hot). On the opposite end, asking for mild is a great options for my kids and they absolutely LOVE the Butter Chicken and Palak Paneer (which speaks volumes since they hate spinach in general). We have only ordered take-out so I can't speak to the in restaurant experience, but this will very likely be the only Indian place we order from from now on in Calgary! Read more

Ordered through Door Dash for the first time and we were very impressed! Best Indian food we have found in Calgary so far, we will be ordering again for sure! Although we weren't able to speak with them directly I got the feeling the family that runs this restaurant is ... very friendly. They sent along thanks with our Door Dash delivery person, and also included complimentary dessert with our order! Read more

I had lunch for the first time here yesterday. I have to say, this is some of the best Indian food I have ever had. The food tasted so fresh and had such a perfect spice to it, that I ate waaay more than I should have. The Chef was ... extremely polite and friendly and he really went above and beyond with the service. Everything was made fresh to order and you can really taste it in the food. Overall the food was authentic and tasted great. However, perhaps not being familiar with the Indian dining tradition or process, we were left a bit confused at the start of our dinner. We did not order appetizers and instead ordered what we thought were 4 types of dishes plus rice ... and naan bread. After about 10 minutes, the first 2 dishes came out. Since we knew and believed these first 2 dishes were not appetizers, we did not start on it but waited until our other orders arrived. After another 10 minutes or so, the server approached and asked why we had not yet started and we stated that we were waiting for the other orders. She then said to not wait and start eating. So we did eat a bit but stopped short of finishing the first 2 dishes on our table as we did not want to get full. This is where our confusion began. It took perhaps another 20 minutes or more before the rest of our food came out. But once it was served to us, everything tasted authentic and delicious indeed. The host was also very engaging and shared her experience as an owner of the business and the challenges of running a food establishment. We had some leftovers which she packaged for us and we enjoyed that for another day or two. Overall, it was a good experience that we may repeat in the coming months. Parking is also easy at this location and because of the small size of the dining room, it was a pleasant dining experience as there was only one other table with patrons (out of only 6 small tables).
