Purple Perk - Calgary, Alberta

I know it's a bit of a Mission institution and I keep trying this place, giving it a fresh start, but I end up leaving disappointed. There's something generally off, and while there isn't one big problem I can put my finger on, it's a lot of little issues that ... consistently pop up every time I visit. I really, really want to like it here for the convenience and that it's a locally owned business. The food is fine but the prices are quite expensive. The baked goods are really hit or miss. Sometimes the peanut butter bar is great, other times it's so crusty and hard you can't get a bite in so we had to take it home and microwave it to soften it up. I've had an okay bagel or two there but more often than not one side is sliced so thin it could pass as a record and the whole thing is burnt to a crisp. The lack of drink selection is odd. I mean very odd. It's a cafe and they only have the most basic of drinks. All the regular hot coffee options and basic tea. But the cold drink selection is really limited. They don't do iced coffee or tea. With so many coffee shops around competing it would be nice if they had cold drinks for summer. Iced tea? I've also never had a coffee shop that makes London fogs not be able to make an iced London fog. Weird. I asked about cold drinks and the guy at the counter just said "I could make a milkshake or something maybe". I mean I just want an iced chai or some coffee on ice because it's 30c out. This often comes up and I've seen several other patrons ask and be disappointed by the cafe drink selection. Lastly, there's fruit flies. Consistently. Quite a lot and enough you find yourself swatting them away trying to eat inside. They have you self return the dishes and dispose of your garbage, which is fine, but that area attracts and always seems to have fruit flies and flies. Maybe a deep clean is needed? Read more

Pretty cozy spot, has free wifi and self serve water/condiments. The man who helped us was quite friendly and had even went out of his way to bring us a brand new bottle of ketchup ⋆˙⟡♡✧˖° Food was nice, super soft brioche buns with crispy seasoned fries. I ordered portobello burger and ... was quite surprised, it had like melty brie/camenbert(?) cheese and a juicy mushroom 🍄 cheesecake was like $9 but it was a very large slice, like bigger than my fist (maybe I have small fists?) it was verrryyyy sweet, but personally I didn’t mind, it was a nice treat ପ(๑•ᴗ•๑)ଓ ♡ will come again- nice atmosphere, good place to study w nice food…and whoever’s playlist was playing that night…very awesome 😎 Read more

We have been getting carrot cake here for years. But now it’s$10 a slice and the piece I got today isn’t even a full piece. The server was not that nice either. Miss attitude! So unimpressed with their increased cost and shrinkflation.

When I use dot live in Calgary, this was my most favourite spot to go to for sitting, working and eating breakfast food or even just popping in for a nice snack. I love their scones especially the whitechcolate raspberry one! I am not keen on their coffee but because I really ... like their overall food and atmosphere and the staff are very friendly. I came back in May and this was one of the places I stopped to grab a coffee and my favourite scone plus came back here for a breakfast sandwich! As I review food places all over when travel, this one I didn't realized I hadn't yet written a review! So here it is! My favoutir split is the bench seat right next to the window - oh yeah! Met some awesome people while working there too! Highly recommend to come here and chill out or work if you can and try their food. I love that HUGE chocolate cake they have in on the counter but I have never tried it bc of calories and it is SO BIG .. haha I would bring someone with me to eat that thing! Best place in Calgary to enjoy food, company and get work done. My husband and I usually would go for their wraps and now have dipped into more of their delicious menu.
