Li-ao Sushi - Calgary, Alberta

We did not like the two bowls of signature ramen that we ordered. No. 172 on the menu. The ramen was missing major toppings and did not look like what was advertised. No egg, no fish cake, instead of chashu pork we got pork bacon style, noodles were over cooked ... and not chewy, lettuce(??) which wilted in the broth instead of nori/seaweed, corn and sautéed onions which was an unpleasant surprise. The only thing that saved the dish was the broth which was flavourful but quite watery. Overall it was a very below average experience. Food tasted great but took longer than expected to arrive at our table. If you order multiple special rolls, they were brought to the table all at once instead of each special roll item individually. We loved the Winter Soldier Roll & Salmon Mango Roll. However, certain items were not ... authentic, as the Chicken Katsu did not have the traditional Katsu Sauce, it was a Sweet Thai Chili Sauce instead. Service was good & kid family. Read more

We've come here for lunch a few times now, and like that their sushi menu is bigger than a lot of other restaurants. Overall, they definitely deserve 3.5 stars. The presentation of their sushi is quite eye catching, nestled inside a bamboo steamer alongside decorative flowers. The rolls are flavourful and ... the salmon sashimi is fresh, though I noticed it was cut a little thinner on our last visit. Their veggie tempura is always piping hot, but also on the more greasy side. He always gets the teriyaki salmon don, which he says is not bad. He did notice that the size of the salmon varied frequently, and it sometimes came with extra stuff, but not always. I decided to be adventurous and tried their ramen once, which was a huge mistake. Overall, everything was above average but not memorable. Sushi pieces, especially sashimi, were fairly well/generously portioned and quality is good. Presentation was nice. We were greeted by the owner. He was very friendly. The food was great. I would recommend the salmon skin salad. It’s truly one of a kind. They have many options of rolls. He specially made a roll called “Hokkaido” - which was pretty good. It’s not on the menu, but ... worth a shot asking him if there’s anything he recommends that’s not on the menu! The spider roll was great too - FYI - this roll is pretty big in size. They have quite a few high chair and the venue is wheelchair accessible. Read more
