Simmer Huang - Burnaby, British Columbia

Unlike many reviews below, I thought Simmer Huang is actually a decent place. Sure it is on the more expensive side for Chinese cuisine but the service and the food more than make up for the cost. It might not be the best bang for the buck but it surely ... provided a great experience for us. We went to Simmer Huang because we haven’t tried this type of restaurant before. They bring everything into your table in a pot with very low heat, keeping the food in the pot just above boiling but without actually burning. The food cooked this way was extremely tender, something that I did not expect. The ingredients were fresh too, making the food much more delicious. The service was great too. We both had tea and our teacup was never below half full. The lady serving our table was very diligent and always top off our cup. Overall we had good experience there. The food was on the expensive side, which explained why the restaurant only had a few tables occupied. I went there with my wife and the two of us just had 1 pot without any extra toppings or drink, only 1 side dish and the total was just over $90, including tax and 15% tips. Interesting place to go to, the servers cook your food in front of you. Full of the flavour of somthing they call the secret sauce. [looks like a brown slime honestly] Ordered the beef and seafood combo. The dish is made with a iron pan and they stir fry garlic ... and hotsauce, then they add the ingredients. After that they add a little bit of water and then put on a lid to steam the dish. Personally, i think it taste exactly how you think it will taste. savory sauce with shrimp, cod, beef. (note the fish they use are boned so you need to pick out the bones when eating) Would i come back? Maybe if it was cheaper. In all honesty this can be made at home easily as well. Overall it's not bad. It's not a place I'd think of when deciding on a restaurant but it's a place I don't mind going back. The flavour is pretty good and I think the idea of dry pot to a soup/ hot pot idea is interesting.

Food is very good and the price is fair (we had a group of 6 people, ordered two pots and it was $21 per person). However, we ordered medium spicy but it was not spicy at all. I would recommend you to order a higher spicy level than usual.

Hotpot is my favorite, I always have Hotpot with my friends and family. Simmer Huang Restaurant provided the different type of Hotpot experience for people. You can eat your own Hotpot in three different ways, which is really cool.  I have been to Simmer Huang Restaurant two times in past few ... months. Simmer Huang Restaurant is located on Kingsway street, Burnaby. It's right across the street from Crystal Mall, and the location is very easy to find.   The ambiance is modern. The servers were nice and friendly. In this restaurant, you can order directly from the menu or create your own combination hotpot. After you ordered the food, the servers would bring all the ingredients on the table. Then, they began to put all the ingredients into the pot for you.   You pick a creation off the menu or create your own combination. The staff then proceeds to cook the food in front of you. First, the server really organized putting all meat and vegetable in the pot to steam them. Once everything got all cooked, it's the time to put the sauce on top of food. Waiting for another 5 mins, we could eat the food. When the food in the Hotpot was almost gone, we dipped Chinese pancakes with the left ingredients in the pot. Also, we ordered vegetable on the side. Once we have done Chinese Pancakes and the food in the pot, the server put the water in the Hotpot. We began to use the normal way to cook Vegetable in the Hotpot. The sounds like lots of works for eating Hotpot at Simmer Huang, but food taste was great. It was a very different experience for me.
