Reviews for Sammy’s Rec Room in Brantford, Ontario
Food was great. Service was amazing. Pricing is reasonable. But washroom can be better.
This was my first time trying out this spot. I was visiting my dad in Brantford so we decided to give it a try. I had the Buffalo chicken sandwich with fries as my side. My dad got the fish and chips with the chips made into a poutine. My ... sandwich was really good. Lots of sauce on the chicken. My only issue was the bun. It was too thick for my liking. My dad loved the fish. Two big pieces that were tasty. We didn't have to wait long either for our order to be ready. The staff are nice and made sure I got a re-fill of my diet pepsi. The poutine was just ok. Only down fall was they used shredded cheese instead of curds. If they got curds my dad said it would of been perfect. We saw their wings coming out of the kitchen for others and they looked amazing! Big and juicy so next visit we'll be trying them. We'll definitely be back in the near future. The waitress informed us that the meat loaf is homemade as well as their Alfredo sauce. Read more
I have frequented Sammy's for many many years. I fell in love with their food and service from my first visit. Great and friendly atmosphere and I always have lovely service. Food is amazing as well. Have had their wings, fish and chips, many appetizers, burgers and sandwiches. Today's visit ... we had 4 cheese spinach dip, and I ordered a bacon cheddar burger with poutine as a side. I was so full from the appetizer and poutine (refuse to take cold fries/poutine home) that I didn't get to touch the big juicy burger until later. I won't remove any stars as it's just a side, but the only improvement I suggest from a poutine enthusiast is to switch to curds vs shredded cheese. Unfortunately never get dessert from here as always to full, but their dessert menu looks delicious. Thank you Sammy's for the amazing food and service all these years! Please don't change. Read more
In short, I wouldn't come back or recommend this place. Please read on for more. Walking into this place today mid afternoon we were greeted....by a customer. There were no staff to greet or seat us, so we took the advice of the random customer sitting near the front, grabbed our ... own menus, and then sat down. After a while, an older lady came to serve us. Initially she was quite pleasant. But when asked about whether the soup of the day was fresh and whether folks like it, one could tell she wasn't eager to answer the question though she did remain somewhat pleasant still. I did also mention that I write reviews and that I am looking forward to trying the food, as it was recommended by another local. The waitress didn't seem particularly receptive to that. We ordered some soda and shortly after that showed up, the soups did as well. Immediately after setting the hot bowls down on the table the same server who took our order told us that "the cheese sank into the soup" before promptly walking away. Indeed, there was a little bit of cheese hanging over the edge of one side of the bowl, and no more cheese to be seen without digging to the bottom of the bowl. The cheese should have been on top of the soup, floating on top of the croutons but was instead at the very bottom, prompting a salvage operation with the utensils to rescue it. The croutons were incredibly soggy, as if sitting in the soup for a long time. They disintegrate in your mouth and taste of nothing. The onions on the other hand were nice, and though I am sure they sat in the soup for a while too, they at least had some texture and gave the soup some much needed substance. The cheese eventually was salvaged and tasted okay, but was mostly in a big blob, which explain why it sank to Davy Jones' locker in the first place. The broth was a little under seasoned but when had with the ball of cheese it was pretty decent. Overall I found it a bit watery. When our mains arrived, the soup bowls were not cleared from the table. I ordered a bacon and cheese burger with a side of mashed potatoes and my friend had a salad and a wrap. My friend commented that the wrap was actually pretty good, and that the salad was okay because "it's hard to f^@! up a salad". My burger actually tasted nice. There was less tomato and more lettuce than I would have liked, but that's okay. There was also a little onion and what looked like a thin film of melted cheese on the patty. The beef itself tasted well seasoned and was hot throughout. It seems it was cooked well, and there was a consistent temperature and browning. The mashed potatoes on the other hand were not good to say the least. I could tell right away that they tasted microwaved, because the inside was warm (not hot), the outside was piping hot, and they had a sandy texture and inconsistent flavour. They were overly garlicky as well. A little is nice for taste, but the garlic taste was quite strong. After getting our bills, we came up to the front and I had mentioned my feedback to one of the other ladies there. She was actually very pleasant, and apologetic about the experience. As she was responding to my feedback (in a very positive way mind you) the older lady who had initially served us and now standing right beside the lady I was talking to gave us a pretty mean look. Despite that, I left a 10% tip, even though I felt I probably shouldn't have. I only did because the other lady was very nice and expressed genuine concern for the feedback, letting us know she'd tell the kitchen. I understand this is more of a laid back establishment, but I have to say the decor feels like it's from 1979. My friend said "I feel like I'm in a movie.". While there was that one saving grace at the end, I don't think this is a place I would go again, even when hungry. If the food quality and the service improves, that might change. Until then, I can't recommend this place. Read more
I’d say 3.5 but I rounded up bc the server was delightful. Everything was good (burger, wings, cold beer, veg sticks and ranch) - as expected from a lil hometown pub but the wings were so dry and tiny. The flavour was really nice but I had to take a drink ... with every bite, talking like chicken jerky texture! My only suggestion is to reevaluate the wing meat supplier and make sure the cooks don’t fry the things to high heaven. Read more
