Grizzly House - Banff, Alberta

A traditional and famous place located in such beautiful town like Banff. This restaurant is known by its fondues and has a long history behind. It is a casual place, not upscale, and very well decorated. The ambience is quiet, familiar and with deemed lights, that you cannot tell if it ... day or night when your are inside. They follow the traditional Swiss fondue, and offering hot rocks as and alternative to oil fondues. You can choose to order a complete fondue dinner, which includes four different courses from appetizers as soups and cheese fondue, main course and dessert (chocolate fondue). Something important about fondues is that not only the cheese needs to be good and have a good texture, but the rest of the food needs to have a proper quality to make the fondue experience a real one. Here is where this restaurant fails, as many others. They tend not to care about the quality of food since it will be “covered” by the flavors of cheese or sauces. This is not correct, all ingredients need to be as good as the other to appreciate the proper fondue taste. The fruit that came with the dessert did not have that freshness you look for when you eat fruit, however the mix with melted chocolate made it all be Ok. Went to The Grizzly House to celebrate my daughter’s belated birthday and being released from the hospital after almost 6 months. It’s been on my want to go places for years so took the opportunity to celebrate today. It was definitely to a rocky start when we were seated in a ... poor location and both the chairs and floor around our table were dirty🫣 my son did not care for the salad, my chicken tortellini soup was room temperature and was pretty well just stock and 4 tortellini, and the cheese fondue definitely needed more flavour, we were thinking we had made a big mistake by choosing The Grizzly House, however the mains came and the hot stone was a delicious and the chocolate fondue to finish was equally delicious. Would have loved to be sat in a different area with it being clean, warm/hot soup would have made for a better experience for sure. In the end the service was good and we were glad we had tried it but not sure we would go again. Read more

This was one of the best eating experiences I have ever had. The seafood hot rock was incredibly unique and delicious. The dessert (recommended by my server!) was made of dreams. I dined solo and had a lovely time, I can't wait to go back for the fondue someday! I did ... find it rather dark inside but it wasn't terribly bad once your eyes got adjusted. The menu has such incredible, fun options that the whole family would enjoy it. A must stop when you're in Banff but I would definitely make a reservation! Read more

This place is great if it fits within your budget. I’ll preface this by saying it’s not cheap by any means. It was a great first time experience to try many different types of meats such as kangaroo, alligator, & ostrich. We ordered the exotic fondue dinner and the Alberta ... dinner (not on menu but incl. beef, boar, elk and venison). The interior is a nice cozy and dark vibe unless you sit by the exterior windows, where you get a nice view of the beautiful mountains. The chicken tortellini soup was immaculate, lightly salted and the perfect temperature. The cheese fondue was a nice, cheesy and had a strong wine tasting undertone. The fondue dinners were great, meat was tender, good cuts, no cheap/fatty bits. The stone was nice and hot to cook the meat on. And I sure smelled like a barbecue after that. The chocolate fondue was the perfect way to end off the night. It was perfectly sweet (not too much, not too little) and some yummy fruits! I would definitely say this place is a must. Read more

Absolutely fantastic experience! The fondue and exotic meat dinner set makes this place so special. The service is excellent and we enjoyed cooking our meat on the hot stone which entertain the whole dining experience. A little suggestion for improvement would be to include the suggested cooking time and matching ... dipping sauce with a piece of note card on the side. Other than that, everything is perfect!
