Safari Bar and Grill - Ajax, Ontario

I love this place because it is so local for us. Their home made nachos are great, made with potato chips. Hubby loves the red pizzadilla. Their chicken wraps are pretty good as well. Plus they have the best sweet potato fries.

The food is always well prepared, and the wait staff seem very friendly. Seems to be a popular place for family gatherings, as both times we've been there, a couple of families seem to be out for an early evening meal. Everyone who works here is very friendly and hospitable. The food is great and I love the specials that the kitchen comes up with. My only disappointment is that they have been out of almost half the great draught beers on their menu for months. Not sure what's up with ... that. Read more

I went there with friends this week and they had the Tribe salad and I had a lamb burger. They enjoyed their salad and I had to settle for one of the worst burgers I've ever eaten. Normally, I would easily finish off a burger, but I couldn't stomach any ... more of it and didn't want to take it home, although I was offered the opportunity. The burger was over-handled by either the staff or whoever prepared it. It was also under-seasoned. To add insult to injury, the burger was overcooked. Ground meat needs to be cooked to 160 degrees F in order to be safe because all side of the ground meat have been exposed to bacteria. There are a number of very effective instant read thermometers on the market and maybe management needs to buy a few. My burger was cooked to probably 175 degrees F. It was dry, chewy and tasteless. The fries were cooked perfectly and were served with... nothing. A spicy mayonnaise or a variation on that theme would have been nice. I had to find a bottle of ketchup to serve with the fries, which were by far the best part of the meal. We had the spinach and roasted garlic goat cheese dip as an appetizer and the nacho chips were also on the overcooked side. Still edible, but just seconds from being grossly overcooked. Food is top shelf, we shared Mussels as our starter, fresh and delicious, had the rack of lamb and chicken entree for our mains, both were extremely good, my lamb could be served at any fine dining restaurant at double the price. Wine selection is a bit limited but ... enough selection to make most people happy, well appointed restaurant with very friendly servers. very nice night out. Read more
